I had the privilege of photographing Alex & James’s Colorado destination wedding in Vail last year. We couldn’t have had a more perfect day. The sun over the mountains, the warm glow of the aspen trees against the bright blue sky was absolute bliss!
Destination Wedding Photography
Although I’m based in Philly, I have done my fair share of traveling for destination weddings. A couple years ago, I was lucky to be a part of a wedding in Norway. I’ve done lots of shoots in California from luxury to boho, and other unique destinations across the U.S.
Photography tips for your destination wedding
Planning a destination wedding is a whole different experience! Here’s some tips and ideas I’ve gathered over the years.
- Seek out all-inclusive wedding packages if you can afford it. This will take the stress out of finding vendors in a place where you don’t live.
- Look for venues that can host your ceremony and reception. Your guests are on vacation, so you want to make sure they have a good time. Having everything in one place helps with transportation logistics and keeps costs down for your guests. Also, it leaves lots of time for candid photos between events!
- Find a photographer that is willing to travel! I love it when I have the opportunity to meet my destination wedding clients in person. In the best-case scenario, the couple is local is PA and we can do their engagement shoot in the area they live before we meet at their destination wedding location.
- Plan for a wedding weekend! With destination weddings, your guests are traveling to be part of your day. Make it worthwhile with activities throughout the weekend and plan the photography accordingly. Group events and excursions are an awesome time to get candid photos of your loved ones, especially when you’re surrounded by beautiful scenery!
Alex & James’ Vail Wedding
Alex and James wedding was perfectly timed so that the fall leaves were at their peak! They chose a ceremony site that showcased the gorgeous destination and made a perfect backdrop for their vows. Their intimate ceremony was on a patio, right at the beautiful Four Seasons Resort in Vail, so it made the destination experience seamless and low stress. And, of course, there were endless opportunities for scenic photos before and after the ceremony.
Destination Wedding Dreams
A destination wedding is a dream vacation and the best day of your life all wrapped up into one. (and you’ve got the perfect spot for future anniversary trips!). As a photographer, I love the intimacy of destination weddings, the scenery, and the opportunity to travel.
